Aquatics for Your Feet (Fairbrother)
3 CEC/CEUs
Beginner / 3.0 credit hours
(This course was recorded on Zoom 2020)
Faculty: Christa Fairbrother, MA, ATRIC
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
As a professional farrier, I used the 18th-century adage, “no hoof, no horse,” all the time. Now, as an aquatic professional, I use the commonalities in perspective to help people improve their balance, move more ergonomically, and stay away from pain. This workshop shares these skills with you to transform your relationship with your clients’ feet.
As aquatic professionals, we see people who can’t balance on their own two feet, have abnormal gait patterns, and regularly deal with foot problems like arthritis and neuropathy. However, rarely do we get training or tools to help in this vital base of anatomy and locomotion.
We’ll cover anatomy, biomechanics, and pathophysiology basics. Then incorporate this theory into practical exercises, mindful inquiry, prop use, and effective cueing skills in the pool. As an online course, we’ll still be doing “foots on” exercises live and watching footage of these principles in the pool.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1) Understand basic anatomy of the feet and ankles.
2) Explain normal gait and load patterns on land and how they are altered in an aquatic environment.
3) Review basic feet pathophysiologies and safety in an aquatic environment.
4) Determine foot exercises to be applied in different aquatic formats.
5) Practice proprioception techniques that can be applied in a variety of aquatic formats.
6) Explore effective cueing for aquatics professionals applying these tools.
FACULTY: Christa Fairbrother, MA, ATRIC, teaches yoga professionally. She uses her own experience in dealing with arthritis to help others use the tools of yoga to manage their health. Her focus is aqua yoga because it’s kind to people’s joints and is so accessible. It allows people who can no longer practice on land to continue yoga in the water.
