PNF and LMT: Functional and Integrated Movement
Featuring Ruth Sova
Thursday October 22, 2026
2:00 - 4:00pm Eastern Time (Miami/New York)
CEC/CEUs: AEA/ATRI 2.0

Daily activities, performance, and functional tasks require the body to operate as an integrated system rather than in isolated parts. This course combines Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF), Loaded Movement Training (LMT), and Intertrial Variability to develop efficient, adaptable, and functional movement.

PNF uses diagonal movement patterns and neuromuscular principles to improve motor control and movement efficiency. LMT applies whole-body, movement-based resistance training to build strength, mobility, stability, coordination, and power. Intertrial Variability introduces purposeful variation in movement to enhance motor learning and adaptability.
Together, these approaches promote coordinated, whole-body function while reducing excessive joint stress and improving mobility, stability, balance, and overall performance.
Applicable to rehabilitation, fitness, performance, wellness, and aquatic settings, this course provides strategies that can be adapted for orthopedic, neurological, athletic, aging, and general wellness populations.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the principles and philosophy of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF).
  2. Explain the concepts and emerging evidence supporting Loaded Movement Training (LMT).
  3. Identify the relationship between integrated movement patterns and functional performance.
  4. Integrate LMT strategies to improve mobility, stability, strength, and function.
  5. Explain how multidirectional loading influences balance, coordination, and functional movement.
  6. Explain the role of intertrial variability in motor learning, neuromuscular adaptation, and functional movement performance.
  7. Design PNF and LMT exercises that incorporate intertrial variability to enhance movement efficiency, adaptability, coordination, and stability.
  8. Apply movement variations involving direction, speed, timing, resistance, and task complexity to improve functional outcomes across rehabilitation, fitness, and performance populations.

Ruth Sova, MS, ATRIC, is dedicated to the growth and betterment of the aquatic therapy industry.  She holds numerous awards and honors, and is recognized for her global contributions in Ai Chi, recently authoring her third book on the topic, Ai Chi – The Water Way to Health & Healing.  Ruth founded the Aquatic Exercise Association and the Aquatic Therapy & Rehab Institute.

This course in Combination with Moving Beyond Pain for Function, Mobility and Well-Being (Aug 2026) and Brain, Balance and Beyond with UCT (Sept 2026) earns you the ATRI Specialty Certificate - Functional Movement Applications Therapeutic Exercise if completed by November 30, 2026!
