Walking speed has been determined to be a risk factor for falls, cognitive decline, and all-cause mortality.  Studies have shown that walking speed can be improved with an appropriately designed exercise program.  This workshop will allow you to have The Keys to the Gait, by reviewing the mechanics of walking and experiencing innovative techniques for incorporating exercises to improve gait, dynamic balance, power and walking speed into any exercise program.   

  1. Participants will have the opportunity to review recent research on the relationship between walking speed and fall risk, cognitive function, and all-cause mortality.
  2. Participants will have the opportunity to review the mechanics of walking to better understand limitations with walking speed.
  3. Participants will experience exercises that are recommended to improve gait, dynamic balance, power and walking speed.
  4. Participants will understand techniques for incorporating exercises to improve walking speed in group exercise programs and individual exercise programs.
