Brain, Balance and Beyond with Unpredictable Command Technique
Featuring Ruth Sova
Tuesday September 29, 2026
2:00 - 4:00pm Eastern Time (Miami/New York)
CEC/CEUs: AEA/ATRI 2.0

The brain learns through adaptation, not through perfect repetition. This course is a brain-based movement system that uses intertrial variability, sensory challenges, cognitive engagement, and the Unpredictable Command Technique (UCT) to improve movement adaptability, balance, function, and pain outcomes.

We will use intertrial variability, unpredictable movement challenges, and multi-dimensional motor tasks to stimulate neuroplasticity, improve balance and coordination, reduce pain, and enhance functional performance. This has practical land- and water-based applications that can be immediately incorporated into therapy, fitness, rehabilitation, and wellness programs.

This is a comprehensive movement education course integrating neuroscience, motor learning, balance training, pain science, and aquatic therapy.

 Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define the principles used and their relationship to motor learning and neuroplasticity.
  2. Explain the role of intertrial variability in movement adaptation and skill acquisition.
  3. Describe the relationship between movement variability, sensory processing, and balance control.
  4. Identify neurological mechanisms that contribute to pain perception and pain amelioration.
  5. Design movement experiences that improve balance, coordination, agility, and reaction time.
  6. Apply unpredictable and variable movement strategies in land- and aquatic-based environments.
  7. Develop progression models that enhance functional movement while maintaining participant safety.
  8. Integrate cognitive, sensory, and motor challenges to improve movement confidence and performance.
Ruth Sova, MS, ATRIC, is dedicated to the growth and betterment of the aquatic therapy industry.  She holds numerous awards and honors, and is recognized for her global contributions in Ai Chi, recently authoring her third book on the topic, Ai Chi – The Water Way to Health & Healing.  Ruth founded the Aquatic Exercise Association and the Aquatic Therapy & Rehab Institute.

This course in Combination with Moving Beyond Pain for Function, Mobility and Well-Being (Aug 2026) and PNF and LMT: Functional and Integrated Movement (Oct 2026) earns you the ATRI Specialty Certificate - Functional Movement Applications Therapeutic Exercise if completed by November 30, 2026!
